Charging, discharging and evaluation (SOH) of battery modules as an OEM system

AVL DiTEST VAS 6910A

The traction battery is the most valuable component of an electric vehicle. To ensure the longest possible service life for the traction battery, we have developed the AVL DiTEST VAS 6910A for you.

It enables fast and safe repair of various battery types: If an individual battery module in a traction battery is defective, it must be replaced with a new one. Once the faulty battery module has been identified, it must be removed from the traction battery. In the next step, the state of charge (SoC) of the new battery module is adjusted to the state of charge of the remaining battery modules within the traction battery. Only when the states of charge are similar does the battery management system (BMS) activate the repaired traction battery. Conditioning new battery modules is therefore absolutely essential in order to reinstall the new battery module into the traction battery and complete the repair process.

Features

  • Safe application due to high-precision monitoring:
    • Intelligent contact detection
    • Reverse polarity protection
    • High-precision permanent monitoring of cell voltages, temperature, and charge/discharge currents
    • Display of critical parameters during the charge/discharge process
  • Guided user interface and automatically generated log
  • Freely selectable target voltage or state of charge
  • Communication with the battery module via 24 analog channels (expandable via accessories) or digital protocols (CAN, CAN-FD, SPI, and ISO SPI)
  • Measurement of the remaining capacity of the battery module using coulomb counting (SOH)
  • Control of the device via OEM diagnostic software or AVL DiTEST DSS
  • Disconnecting the PC during the charge/discharge process
  • Balancing of cell voltages within the battery module (either analog or digital)

USPs

  • High charging capacity & currents (max. 11 kW & 80 A)
The VAS 6910A enables the conditioning of battery modules in the shortest possible time.

  • Wide voltage range (2 – 430 450 VDC)
The VAS 6910A enables charging of battery modules between 3 – 400 VDC and discharging between 2 – 430 VDC. This makes it capable of conditioning a wide variety of battery modules for both BEV and PHEV. Combined with the AVL DiTEST HV SAT, even the entire battery pack can be charged or discharged.

  • Energy recovery into the power grid
In addition to discharging the battery modules via the heating element, the VAS 6910A enables the recovery of the discharged energy. For this purpose, the energy extracted from the battery module is fed back into the power grid (once approved by the local grid operator). This allows you to reduce your net energy demand and energy costs. Compared to discharging via the heating element, energy recovery accelerates the discharging process considerably.
